What is Postnatal Yoga?

A postnatal or mum & baby yoga class typically concentrates on building strength and easing tension within the body, while also incorporating relaxation and meditation techniques to help you catch up on rest and learn how to soothe your nervous system.

One thing to bear in mind about parent & baby yoga classes is that they will never go according to plan: some babies will cry, some might want to feed, and others might insist on sleeping on you for the entire class. There are absolutely no expectations or rules when it comes to parent & baby yoga - everything is welcome and nothing is judged. You are welcome to show up exactly as you are and do as much or as little as you like. Even if you skip certain postures, don’t feel up to trying a breathwork technique, or have to rock your baby for the entire class, you’ll still be immersing yourself in a safe and nurturing space alongside other parents who know exactly what you’re going through.

My journey to becoming a prenatal & postnatal yoga teacher:

I have always been fascinated by pregnancy and birth. For a long time, I have felt called to learn more and follow the sacred path of birth work, supporting strong and powerful women and parents as they embark on this life-changing journey.

In 2024, I spent a week on the beautiful West coast of Ireland immersing myself in all things pregnancy and birth, as I completed my 100-hour Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training with Alchemy School of Yoga. I then returned a few months later to complete my 30-hour Postnatal & Parent & Baby Yoga Teacher Training.

I offer weekly Postnatal / Parent & Baby group classes in Colchester on Tuesday mornings: you can either book in for a six-week block, or pay-as-you go for greater flexibility. Find out more and secure your place over on my booking page.

Most mums are advised to wait until they are six weeks postpartum before returning to any form of physical activity, to ensure the body has adequate time to rest and heal. Please check in with your GP, midwife or physio before booking in for a postnatal yoga class. Babies are welcome to join and there are baby changing facilities available on-site. Breastfeeding, bottle-feeding and pumping are all welcome. Every postnatal journey is different - if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
